Twenty Four Acres, West Sussex

The Lake, Shillinglee Park, on a May evening

Uploader's Comments

Rather a fine body of water, remote from any public highway - and, up till now, only scantily documented on Geograph. Despite its name, the Lake has industrial origins, and would appear to be a vast mill-pond, dammed at its eastern end - where what appears to be an old millrace still exists. According to the listing text for nearby Park Mill Farmhouse there was an iron foundry here in the late 16th century http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-424179-park-mill-farmhouse-plaistow. The surviving water chutes are pretty substantial structures, of a later date - so perhaps water power was put to work again in the 19th century.
