Mine road along line of Sedling Vein

Uploader's Comments

Coal seams arose from material laid down in horizontal beds whereas mineral veins tend to be intruded into cracks in existing rock in deposits tending towards the vertical. These veins often outcrop at the land surface even though concealed by an overlying layer such as soil or glacial drift; the Sedling vein is one such feature and was, in places at least, mined from the surface rather than by underground working. The wall and mine road seen here follow the line of the vein; old mine spoil can be seen in the foreground.
