Watchet, small seaport town with ry. sta., St Decumans par., Somerset, on the Bristol Channel, 16½ miles NW. of Taunton; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Saturday. Watchet is an ancient place, and was called in Saxon times Wecedport. It was destroyed twice by the Danes in the 10th century, and was represented in Parliament in the time of Edward I. It has a tidal harbour, a pier, and a breakwater. It exports iron ore and farm produce, and imports coal and timber. Ironfounding is carried on. The St Decumans papermills are at Watchet.
