The decaying top of this fence post provides a miniature refuge for plants, protected from the ubiquitous sheep. I counted at least 5 species, including a fern, as well as mosses and lichens and a tiny rowan sapling. The varied thriving inhabitants of this small botanical haven contrast markedly with the monotony of the surrounding over-grazed moorland.
