Here at Pont-blaen-cwm du, the Roman road of Sarn Helen crosses the stream down Nant-cwm-du. The route of Sarn Helen is said to have run from Aberconwy to Carmarthen, a distance of some 160 miles. The name comes from Sarn y Lleng which is 'the road of the legions' rather than some mythical figure called Helen. At the time this photo was taken there was a youth hostel at Ystradfellte, sadly now no longer, as it was a welcome stopping point.
