The dark patch isn't an oil spill but is an area of deeper water. The paler area stretching out from the near shore is the sandy bottom found on the west side of the loch. At the boundary between the light and dark areas, the water is still only about 3 feet deep but rapidly drops off into the deeper water - not a good place to wade in poor light!
