The original house at Knockbrex dated from 1820. The estate was purchased by a wealthy Manchester merchant called James Brown in the 1890's. He spent much of his retirement deve.loping the house and funding the construction of associated buildings that were often idiosyncratic in style. Brown died in 1920.
