Kiln Copse, Surrey

Old ice house, Eastbury Manor

Uploader's Comments

The entrance to the ice house in Kiln Copse. The structure is a circular stone lined pit with a conical roof partially buried in a north facing bank for insulation. Ice houses were a common feature of stately houses to store ice during the summer months in the days before refrigeration became available. Many of them were built away from the house usually in a wood or copse.
