High Wood, Dorset

St. Edward's church, Athelhampton, Dorset

Uploader's Comments

This pretty church was built in 1861 and dedicated to St John, it being an improvement over the older church built on the opposite side of the old A35 road. The design was worked on and the layout set by Thomas Hardy who at that time was in the employ of the architects, Hicks of Dorchester. It flourished until the mid 1970s when with lessening attendance it was falling into a state of poor repair. It was purchased by the estate and used for storage. 20 years later it was restored and attracted an Orthodox congregation. It was then dedicated to St. Edward, King and martyr, who was murdered at Corfe Castle in the year 879
