Crane's Fen, Cambridgeshire

Sand and gravel extraction at Ouse Fen

Uploader's Comments

This area is named Crane's Fen on the map, but the overall site, and the reedbed reserve that is gradually being created, is known as Ouse Fen. It is a collaboration between Hanson Aggregates and the RSPB. The exposed surface deposits show the sand and gravel layer (glacial outwash from receding ice sheets about 12,000 years ago), alluvial clay from times as open water and overlying peat from time as a marsh, as this area was until it was drained in the 18th century.
