Claypit Plantation, Cambridgeshire

Course of the Newmarket and Chesterford Railway

Uploader's Comments

The trees on the far side of this field are growing on the course of the Newmarket and Chesterford Railway, which opened in 1848 and closed in 1851 when the line from Newmarket to Cambridge was built, making it one of the world's first main-line railway closures. For more traces, and more about it, see images in gridsquares [[TL5353]] and [[TL5454]]. The further line of trees and hedges marks the A11.
