Clawthorpe Fell, Cumbria

Limestone pavement, Clawthorpe Fell National Nature Reserve

Uploader's Comments

The footpath north of Clawthorpe enters an area of limestone pavement which includes some remarkably large and smooth slabs - almost like poured concrete. There are examples of shallow runnels such as the one shown here, formed by a combination of chemical solution of the limestone and erosion.
