Augill Smelt Mill

Uploader's Comments

Descriptions of this ruined building in lead mining books refer to it as a smelt mill where lead ore was converted into pure lead. Strangely the late 19thC OS map shows it as an iron foundry, so possibly it had a change of use after lead mining in the area became uneconomic. There is a chimney shown a few hundred metres away on a nearby hillside on the 1897 map, but I could find no trace of a flue system in the deep undergrowth around the building.
