Lower Findhorn: The Slot

Uploader's Comments

Known to kayakers as "The Slot" this is one of a number of features in the Lower Findhorn (gorge) known to fishermen by more romantic sounding names. Although at first glance, it looks quite straightforward, the water pushes strongly under an undercut wall river right, and kayakers can be pushed right under this, to emerge some way downstream - assuming that there is no debris trapped under the rock, in which case they may never emerge at all. As it is pretty much impossible to ascertain whether there is timber or other debris trapped, this is regarded as a dangerous place to make a mistake (it gets a grade 5), with the result that the drop is usually portaged, even by strong groups. At a low level like this (about as low as you can reasonably run the gorge), it is perhaps not so pushy, so two of our group ran it with a live-bait rescuer just below. He wasn't needed, as both made it look remarkably easy !
