Backside Beck, Cumbria

Mountain View, Westerdale

This fine Victorian farmhouse in a fabulous location near the head of the dale has been empty for several decades (A. Wainwright noted that it was unoccupied in his 'Walks on the Howgill Fells', published in 1972). The roof slates are moving and what looks like a small tree is starting to sprout from a chimney. It cannot be too many years now before total ruination becomes inevitable - the adjoining barns and outbuildings are just skeletons. A peek through the windows shows that the interior is well on the way to disintegration. The small roofless building in front of the house may once have been a wash house or bathroom - there is a fireplace and an old bath in there. What a shame! Even a passing shaft of sunlight hardly dispels the sense of gloom here. The fells across the dale are Yarlside (left) and Kensgriff - they at least endure.
