Clydfan (left) and Littlehurst on the western side of Hurst Lane. 'Clydfan' is Welsh for 'Cosy Place'. Littlehurst was formerly Brickyard Cottages and bricks and tiles were made there until the First World War. The cottages were rebuilt as the present house by Hercules Brabazon in the late 19th century and his monogrammed initials can still be seen over the doorway. Brabazon (1821-1906), the youngest son of an aristocratic Irish family, was a wealthy landowner with estates in Ireland and the north of England as well as in Sedlescombe where Oaklands House in the present Pestalozzi Estate was his country seat. He was an amateur musician and a painter whose work became, and remains, highly regarded
