Wincanton, market town and par. with ry. sta., Somerset, on river Cale, 18 miles S.E. of Glastonbury, 4130 ac., pop. 2410; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Wednesday. Wincanton is an ancient town, called by the Saxons Wyndcaleton. In 1688 it was the scene of a skirmish between adherents of James II. and William of Orange. Brewing, and trade in corn and cheese are carried on.
